La Payunia is one of the most striking volcanic regions on the planet. Located in the south of Mendoza, this protected area contains more than 800 volcanic cones, creating a black, surrealist and utterly unique landscape found nowhere else in Argentina.

Its biodiversity, the silence of its desert and its extreme geography make it an unmissable destination for lovers of adventure, nature and photography.

🌉 The Río Grande Suspension Bridge

We begin the adventure crossing the imposing Río Grande suspension bridge, one of the most spectacular natural gateways in southern Mendoza. This hanging walkway connects us to the volcanic landscapes of La Payunia, offering panoramic views of the river and its mountain surroundings.

🌋 Inside La Payunia

Along the internal route, we cross unique formations:

  • Pampas Negras — flat plain covered in volcanic lapilli, an almost lunar landscape
  • Volcán El Morado — very low-difficulty trekking (~300 m) up to the crater
  • Los Colores Panorama
  • Apacheta del Morado
  • Campo de Bombas — hundreds of pyroclasts solidified in the open air
  • Volcán La Herradura — unique semicircular silhouette
  • Museo de Cera — solidified lava formations shaped into curious figures

❓ Frequently asked questions

Where does the excursion depart from? We pick you up from your accommodation within the urban area of Malargüe between 7:30 and 8:00 AM.

Is lunch included? Yes. A countryside lunch and an afternoon snack are both included.

Is it physically demanding? No. The route is accessible for all ages. The trekking to Volcán El Morado is very low difficulty.

What kind of transport do you use? 19-seat Mercedes Sprinter minibuses, CNRT-certified, with professional drivers.

Is there time for photos? Yes! We stop at every key site so you can enjoy the scenery and take pictures.

What should I bring? Comfortable clothing and footwear, sunscreen, insect repellent, water (refills available) and a snack. Lunch is included.

Are there toilets along the route? Only at the Park Rangers’ station (on entry and exit) and at the end at the GeoParque.

How do I book my place? With a 30% deposit by bank transfer or cash. If you pay the full amount by card, the deposit is deducted at the end.

Are pets allowed? No. Animals are not permitted inside the Reserve.
